PCB makers more sanguine of notebook/netbook market
PCB makers HannStar Board, Gold Circuit Electronics (GCE), Tripod Technology, Dynamic Electronics and Global Brands Manufacture (GBM) all expect to see shipment growth in notebook PCBs driven by demand for netbooks and ultra-thin notebooks this year.
HannStar Board’s notebook PCB revenue share was more than 70% in the first quarter, up from 66% in the same period of 2008, according to the company. The company expects netbook PCB shipments to grow quarter by quarter this year.
GCE estimates its notebook PCB shipments to reach 30 million units in 2009, up 7% on year mostly driven by the netbook segment.
Tripod shipped 10 million notebook PCBs in 2008, the company said. The notebook segment’s share of revenues increased to 12% in the first quarter of 2009, and it is expected to be Tripod’s major growth driver in the long term, it said.
Notebook PCBs account for 17% of Dynamic’s total revenues. The company plans to expand capacity by 100,000 square feet for high-density interconnect (HDI) board production in the second half of this year.
GBM entered the notebook PCB market in the second half of 2008 with a total shipment of two million units last year. The company has won orders from Quanta Computer, Inventec, Asustek Computer and Clevo and expects to add Compal Electronics as its new customer this year, according to industry sources.
HannStar Board, GCE and Tripod currently own 40%, 20% and 10% of the global notebook PCB market, respectively, the sources added.
